You probably already know that carbon monoxide or CO, can cause sudden illness and death. Did you know that CO is colorless and odorless? Because it is undetectable by our senses, CO detectors are an important part of any life safety solution.

What You Need to Know about Carbon Monoxide

The Facts

You may know that carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, can cause sudden illness and death. Did you know that CO is colorless and odorless? Because it is undetectable by our senses, CO detectors are an important part of any life safety solution. Carbon Monoxide is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels, including coal, wood, charcoal, oil, kerosene, propane, and natural gas. Products and equipment powered by internal combustion engines such as portable generators, cars, lawn mowers, and power washers also produce CO.

Who is at Risk?

According to the CDC, all people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning. Certain groups — unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems — are more susceptible to its effects. Each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning, more than 20,000 visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. Fatality is highest among Americans 65 and older.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 170 people in the United States die every year from CO produced by non-automotive consumer products. These products include malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, ranges, water heaters and room heaters; engine-powered equipment such as portable generators; fireplaces; and charcoal that is burned in homes and other enclosed areas. According to this video from the CDC, placing your generator 15 feet from your home may NOT be far enough away.

Know the Symptoms of CO Poisoning

Because CO is odorless, colorless, and otherwise undetectable to the human senses, people may not know that they are being exposed. The initial symptoms of low to moderate CO poisoning are similar to the flu without the typical fever. They include:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

High level CO poisoning results in progressively  severe symptoms, including:

  • Mental confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of muscular coordination
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Ultimately death

Symptom severity is related to both the CO level and the duration of exposure. For slowly developing residential CO problems, occupants and/or physicians can mistake mild to moderate CO poisoning symptoms for the flu, which sometimes results in tragic deaths.

For rapid, high level CO exposures (e.g., associated with use of generators in residential spaces), victims can quickly become confused, and can lose muscle control without having first experienced milder symptoms.

Prevention

Follow these easy steps from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to guard against CO poisoning in your home or office:

  • Never operate a portable generator or any other gasoline engine-powered tool either in or near an enclosed space such as a garage, house, or other building. Even with open doors and windows, these spaces can trap CO and allow it to quickly build to lethal levels.
  • Operate portable generators outside and as far away from the building as possible. Also operate generators away from doors and windows. According to the CDC, 15 feet may not be far enough away depending on wind speed and other factors.
  • Add a professionally installed and monitored CO detector that meets the requirements of the current UL 2034 safety standard. Effective coverage of your home can be determined with our onsite free consultation. After installation, make sure the detector is not covered up by furniture or draperies.
  • Make sure appliances are installed and operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local building codes. Most appliances should be installed by qualified professionals. Have the heating system professionally inspected and serviced annually to ensure proper operation. The inspector should also check chimneys and flues for blockages, corrosion, partial and complete disconnections, and loose connections.
  • If you smell an odor from your gas refrigerator’s cooling unit have an expert service it. An odor from the cooling unit of your gas refrigerator can mean you have a defect in the cooling unit. It could also be giving off CO.
  • Never service fuel-burning appliances without proper knowledge, skill and tools. Always refer to the owner’s manual when performing minor adjustments or servicing fuel-burning equipment.
  • Never use portable fuel-burning camping equipment inside a home, garage, vehicle or tent unless it is specifically designed for use in an enclosed space and provides instructions for safe use in an enclosed area.
  • Never burn charcoal inside a home, garage, vehicle, or tent.
  • Never leave a car running in an attached garage, even with the garage door open.
  • Never use gas appliances such as ranges, ovens, or clothes dryers to heat your home.
  • Never operate unvented fuel-burning appliances in any room where people are sleeping.
  • Do not cover the bottom of natural gas or propane ovens with aluminum foil. Doing so blocks the combustion air flow through the appliance and can produce CO.
  • During home renovations, ensure that appliance vents and chimneys are not blocked by tarps or debris. Make sure appliances are in proper working order when renovations are complete.

Unfortunately, fatal falls among those 65 and older have risen an alarming 112% since 1999. Read these tips that the National Safety Council recommended to reduce potential fall risks for yourself and loved ones.

10 Fall Prevention Tips

Tragically, falls among adults 65 and older caused over 36,000 deaths in 2020, making it the leading cause of injury death for that group. Read these tips from the National Safety Council to reduce potential fall risks for yourself and loved ones.

Take the first steps in fall prevention by:

1. Stay active and exercise to increase core strength and balance.
2. Review medications and be aware of those with side effects that can make you drowsy or lightheaded.
3. Get your vision checked, as poor vision can lead to falls.
4. Remove tripping hazards (papers, books, clothes, shoes) from stairs and places you or loved ones may walk.
5. Clean up all spills immediately and keep floor dry.
6. Keep frequently used items in cabinets you can reach easily without using a step stool.
7. Install grab bars next to your toilet and in your tub/shower and install handrails and lights on staircases.
8. Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower floors.
9. Improve lighting in your home, including using a nightlight or use automatic lighting triggers as part of your security system.
10. Wear shoes with good support and non-slip soles.

“For older adults, falls and the resulting injuries can diminish their ability to lead active, independent lives,” said Deborah Hersman, NSC president and CEO. “Identifying potential fall hazards and making changes to improve your strength, balance and vision can help reduce your risk of a fall at any age.”

Whenever you’re away from your home for more than a day or two: Be careful what you post on social media about your vacation. Don’t advertise that you’re away!

Vacation Safety & Security Tips

Keep vacation time stress-free with these safety and security tips.

For Home

  • Be careful what you post on social media about your vacation. Don’t advertise that you’re away!
  • Have mail and packages picked up, forwarded or held by the post office.
  • Arrange to have your lawn mowed in summer and your walk and driveway shoveled in winter.
  • Stop newspaper deliveries and ask a friend to pick-up “throw-away” circulars.
  • Let us know if there are temporary changes to your call list while you’re away at 410-546-2210 or complete our online form.
  • Set up security system interactive light schedules to automatically turn lights on and off so it looks like someone is home.
  • Tell dependable neighbors when you plan to be away and when you plan to return.
  • Make sure trusted neighbors or family members are aware of your security system passcode and create custom user codes for them to disarm your system. Don’t worry, you can always delete or change your user codes. (Don’t have these features yet? Check out our Customer Loyalty Rewards program)
  • Join with your neighbors to keep a close watch on what’s happening in your community. Being a good neighbor and working closely with them is a good way to prevent crime.

For You and Your Family

  • At the airport, keep a close eye on your luggage at all times. When going through security, put your laptop on the X-Ray conveyor belt last, so you have time to get through the metal detector and be waiting for it on the other side.
  • Lost or stolen wallets often lead to identity theft. Carry only the cards and cash you plan on using during your trip.
  • Do not carry your passport with you when out and about. Make a few photocopies and leave your original in the hotel safe. Leave a copy of your passport with a trusted friend at home, just in case.
  • Travel like a local. Avoid obvious actions that will make you stand out as a tourist. Dress in a similar style and know your surroundings. Plan your route in advance, so you have an idea where you are going and you don’t need to look at a map while walking through a busy area.
  • Check out more travel safety tips from Travelers Insurance

Have a safe vacation! If you’ve made temporary changes to your call list, make sure you tell us when you’re back home.

The most common door-to-door scams involve selling meat, magazines, asphalt paving and alarm systems.

Watch Out for Door-to-Door Sales Scams

Many scammers are still knocking on doors during spring and summer. Be wary when a stranger shows up at your front door with a “limited time offer” that has to be purchased RIGHT NOW! TODAY! The most common door-to-door scams involve selling meat, magazines, asphalt paving and alarm systems.

The Better Business Bureau has issued multiple warnings about these companies and their tactics. Attorneys General in several states have been after these companies for years, too.

Don’t fall for these popular alarm system scams

What Scammers Say

The Truth

“This is a limited time offer. You MUST sign up today to get a FREE security system.” No reputable company will pressure you to “sign right now.” Many scam artists will push free systems but not disclose high monthly fees.
“There have been lots of burglaries in your neighborhood. You really need to buy an alarm system today to protect your family.” Reputable home security companies do NOT use scare tactics. A quick call to your local police non-emergency number will let you know if, in fact, there has been a rash of burglaries.
“I’m with Alarm Engineering and I’m here to upgrade your system FREE.” Scam artists who use this approach will sign you up with an entirely different company. Alarm Engineering employees NEVER drop in on our customers unannounced. Call us at 410-546-2210 if someone tries this scam at your front door.
“We bought out Alarm Engineering and are here to upgrade you.” Again, if another company tries to convince you that Alarm Engineering has been sold, give our office a call right away. We have been locally owned and operated since 1985 and we plan on sticking around to serve our customers for years to come. 410-546-2210

Alarm Engineering doesn’t use high pressure sales tactics or door to door drop-ins.

Remember…never sign anything until you call our office to double-check.

All Alarm Engineering team members arriving at your home for an appointment will carry identification and will be wearing an Alarm Engineering shirt and driving a company vehicle with a logo. If you ever have a question about the veracity of someone claiming to be an Alarm Engineering employee, call us and we will be happy to confirm for you.

A trained professional is always here to help 24/7, give us a call if you have any questions: 410-546-2210.

Ready to Make the Change?

Are you with another alarm company today and are tired of your monthly rate going up every year and poor service? Most of the time, we can reprogram the equipment you’re already using at no charge to you. Have you seen our five star Google Reviews?

ex-burglars reveal it only takes 2 minutes to break into a home with no visible alarm system and 78% say that an alarm system would make them target a different home entirely.

What Burglars Look For & How to Deter Them

Burglars are increasingly using social media outlets to isolate and track potential victims. A recent survey of some former burglars shed some light on what they look for and what deters them. Here are the five most common mistakes homeowners make, according to ex-burglars:

  • Leaving windows open
  • Leaving valuables in plain sight to passersby
  • Posting whereabouts on social media sites
  • Hiding keys near the front door
  • Leaving postal deliveries out

In the same survey, ex-burglars reveal it only takes 2 minutes to break into a home with no visible alarm system and 78% say that an alarm system would make them target a different home entirely.

Professional installation, 24/7 monitoring and the deterrence factor of yard signs/decals significantly reduce your likelihood of a break in, according to a Rutgers study. Here are 10 other things you can do now to continue to dissuade a burglar from choosing your home

10 Quick Tips to Keep Your Home Secure

A burglary occurs somewhere in the United States every 15.4 seconds.

A big first step of securing your home and/or business with a monitored Alarm Engineering security system. Professional installation, 24/7 monitoring and the deterrence factor of yard signs/decals significantly reduce your likelihood of a break in, according to a recent Rutgers study.

Here are 10 other things you can do now to continue to dissuade a burglar from choosing your home:

  1. More lighting. Burglars love dark corners and crevices. Increasing lighting around your property may convince a burglar to move on. Automatic light schedules in your home can also make your home looked lived in when you’re away.
  2. Take away hiding spots. Most burglaries happen in the late afternoon so high shrubbery or bushes in front of windows are a perfect entry point for would-be burglars. Keep your landscaping nicely manicured to decrease the likelihood a burglar can stay concealed while trying to break in.
  3. Be a good neighbor. Keep on the lookout for your neighbor’s property and unusual behavior and ask your neighbors to do the same. Also create a neighborhood system where mail and newspapers are periodically collected so it’s not obvious that someone is away.
  4. Reign in social medial posts about your location. Whether you’re posting updates about your cousin’s out of town wedding or date night, keep in mind burglars are now casing social media for easy targets who they know aren’t home.
  5. Use high-quality doors and locks to decrease your vulnerability.
  6. Cut out the spare keys. Burglars will be looking for the spare key under your mat. New lock technology can also allow you to lock or unlock your home remotely to let a visitor or worker in so you don’t need that spare key in the first place.
  7. Lock your windows! It sounds deceptively simple, but locking is a crucial step many people overlook.
  8. Sliding glass doors are especially vulnerable. In addition to having them contacted and monitored, take extra precaution by inserting a simple wooden dowel into the track, preventing or limiting movement.
  9. Invest in a safe. Keep your valuables in a locked safe and change the combination regularly. You can also receive SMS alerts on your phone when anyone enters a specific safe room or opens a certain cabinet.
  10. Don’t tempt a burglar. Keep empty electronics packaging off your curb and keep any tools or ladders out of plain sight. They can become easy targets, or worse, used as tools to break into your home. If you have an onsite NVR for video, consider a cloud solution instead.

12 Important Holiday Safety & Security TipsFollow these important Holiday Safety Tips to keep all your holiday memories good ones from Alarm Engineering

Make sure all your holiday memories are good ones with these security tips:

  • A beautifully decorated tree is the centerpiece of so many front-facing windows, but showcasing all the presents under that tree is tempting to burglars.
  • New electronics are exciting – for family and burglars alike; large empty boxes for that new big screen or computer left on your curb are inadvertent advertisements for the goodies inside your home.
  • Light up your home, inside and out – burglars hate well-lit areas.
  • Remember that many would-be burglars are opportunists; don’t leave any tools or ladders outside that could be easily stolen or re-purposed to aid a burglar break into your home.
  • An undisturbed snow covered driveway lasting more than a day is an easy giveaway that you are away from home. Team up with neighbors and ask them to leave tire tracks while you’re away.

Traveling during the holidays?

  • Security systems with integrated home automation can make your empty home look lived in occupied with automatic lighting schedules as well as live remote access to your TV and stereo systems for ambient sound.
  • Social Media is a great way to let friends and extended family know exactly where you are. Unfortunately, burglars use this information as well.  Be thoughtful about broadcasting when your home is vacant.
  • Of course, arm your alarm system before you leave.
  • Update your vacation call list with us before you leave at by calling our office at 410-546-2210. Now you can also update your call list using a secure form on our website. Candle Safety Reminders

Candles are pretty and popular during the holidays but they are a leading cause of home fires – and home fire deaths. U.S. fire departments recently responded to an estimated 11,640 home structure fires started by candles.

Remember, a candle is an open flame, which means that it can easily ignite anything that can burn.

  • Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.
  • Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.
  • Think about using flameless candles in your home. They look and smell like real candles.

October is Fire Prevention Month. As the weather turns colder we start using heaters, fireplaces and candles more. Here are some quick fire safety tips from the NFPA: Put candles on a sturdy, uncluttered surface and never leave a child alone with a burning candle.

10 Essential Autumn Safety Tips

October is Fire Prevention Month.  As the weather turns colder we start using heaters, fireplaces and candles more. Here are some quick fire safety tips from the U.S. Fire Administration.

  1. Put candles on a sturdy, uncluttered surface and never leave a child alone with a burning candle.
  2. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or space heater.
  3. Only plug one heat-producing appliance (such as coffee makers, toasters or space heaters) into a receptacle outlet at a time.
  4. Never burn candles if oxygen is used in the home.
  5. Test your fire and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure the batteries are fresh and that your equipment isn’t more than 10 years old.

Halloween Safety Tips

Keep the kids safe this Halloween with tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  1. When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
  2. If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child’s costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.
  3. Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
  4. Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers, then the adult can finish the job. If children do the cutting, be sure to use a child safe tool. Check out these pumpkin carving with kids tips.
  5. Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.

Home security is far more than intrusion and smoke alarms, it’s an integrated approach that keeps the bad guys out AND the good guys safe

Keeping the Good Guys Safe

Home security is far more than intrusion and smoke alarms, it’s an integrated approach that keeps the bad guys out AND the good guys safe. You protect your house and valuables; be sure you are protecting what makes your house a home: family.

Video and remote control of your home may sound like too much, but consider these scenarios:

  1. Your children are old enough to come home from school by themselves before you get home. But do you really know when they arrived, who they are bringing home with them or whether homework is getting done? Interactive Services allows you to receive video clips via text or email – so you can have a snapshot video of your children arriving safely home. Or, peek in on them real-time from work and see whether they are doing homework or playing video games.
  2. Monitor doors to the medicine, gun, and liquor cabinet and see valuable video clips triggered by motion. Children are curious and they may not admit that they try to enter adult-only areas of your home when you’re not there. Provide yourself with the peace of mind that comes with knowing.
  3. Need to check in on your elderly parent who is still living independently but recently had a health scare or a fall? Of course we offer personal emergency solutions- but with video clips and real time video, you can do more than alert medical personnel when there is an emergency, you empower yourself to check in on Mom or Dad whenever you want, just to be sure.
  4. Is your pet safe to roam around the house while you’re gone? Just want to check in, or adjust the temperature remotely if there is a severe temperature change to make sure they are comfortable? No problem – smarter home solutions are here.
