Using the 5 D's of Home Security, here are some ways to achieve both increased security and beautiful, friendly curb appeal.

Secure Your Yard with the 5D’s of Home Security

For many homeowners, the front yard is a challenging area to keep secure.

By design, the front yard is a semi-public area between your home and the street. If you’re like most of us, you care about your home’s curb appeal and aren’t interested in extreme security measures, but there still are discreet steps you can take to make your front yard and ultimately your home more secure.

Using the 5 D’s of Home Security, here are some ways to achieve both increased security and friendly curb appeal.

Deter

  • A professionally monitored smart home security system is perhaps the most powerful deterrent of all, and well-placed new yard signs are a great way to announce your security system. Do you need new yard signs or decals for windows? Let us know here, replacements are always free.
  • While most of its technology will reside in your home, several elements will be noticeable from the outside. These include outdoor video camerasor a video doorbell—and smart locks for your doors.
  • After dark, lighting is an excellent deterrent. Focus on a few key areas for lighting: your front door and porch, plus any potential hiding places in your hard.
  • Motion activated smart lighting, with its power to suddenly and startlingly put an intruder in the spotlight, is best of all. Smart lights are easy to have installed on your front porch and around your whole property as part of a smart home security system, which can also schedule the lights to turn on automatically at sunset.

Detect

  • Your monitored security system is an important part of the detection of people up to no good.
  • Video cameras integrated into your security system are excellent detection devices as well. You can get a video clip sent right to your smartphone or peek in at any time. With recording on the cloud, there’s no worries about a bad guy destroying the DVR evidence in your home. You might be able to save on your video upgrade with our Customer Loyalty Rewards.

Deny

  • Nothing radiates curb appeal like a traditional, white picket fence. Yet, it’s also a signal that says, loud and clear: “My property starts here.”
  • Gates are easily climbed. However, bad guys typically go for the easiest target and don’t want to be seen climbing or even jumping a fence. They’ll also be aware that they’ll look suspicious on the other side, and that the slatted design of the fence leaves nowhere to hide from passers-by.

Delay

  • A clear, well-maintained path to your front door—ideally bordered with shrubs or flowers—sends a message to stay on the path.
  • It’s an example of ‘natural access control,’ where landscaping is used not to physically block people, but to subtly discourage certain behavior. Look at the front of any public building and you’ll see it in action.
  • Another effective technique is to strategically plant roses, hawthorns and other thorny shrubs around ground-floor windows. Again, this won’t keep out a determined intruder, but it will discourage an opportunistic one from peering into your home. Plus, those roses will complement your picket fence.

Defend

  • Sometimes referred to as the response layer, this is where the police come in, notified by your 24/7 monitored security system – they catch the bad guys (or more often, run them off).
  • Make sure your monitored security system is working flawlessly by testing your system regularly.

You might think that smart devices are the definition of a smart home. Smart devices are an important part of building a smart home, but some smart devices alone doesn't make a smart home.

Smart Devices are Only a Part of The Smart Home

You might think that smart devices are the definition of a smart home. Smart devices are an important part of building a smart home, but some smart devices alone doesn’t make a smart home.

So what makes a home smart?

The Coach

Think of your favorite sports team. Each player has important and specialized skills, but they can only win games by working together.

The foundation of a good team is the coach. Throughout the game, the coach gets information from players and assistants to understand the big picture of what’s happening on the field. With this information, he can call the plays and makes sure each player contributes.

The true smart home has such a coach: your security system. Your security system controls every device in the home. It gathers intelligence from around the home and coordinates actions to make the home safer, smarter and more efficient.

You might not see what’s happening behind the scenes, but you will definitely notice the unique features and value that only a security-controlled smart home can deliver.

Your smart home using integrated video

Video monitoring is a popular smart home security solution. Standalone smart cameras record motion-triggered clips of activity in the home and send them to the homeowner, providing valuable awareness of what’s going on.

An integrated video system can do more. The security system can tell the platform who disarmed the system or where important activity is happening, such as someone entering the back door. With this information the platform intelligently directs the camera to capture important activity and then alerts you with a video clip on your smart phone.

When the homeowner disarms the system, the camera doesn’t record. The platform enhances awareness when you’re away and privacy when you’re home.

Your smart home sensing opportunities to save energy

A standalone smart thermostat knows when you walk in front of it. But that’s not a lot of information to decide whether it should make the entire home comfortable, or set back to save energy.

A smart home can trigger energy saving opportunities depending on where you are. For example, if you’re away the thermostat can automatically change to the ‘away’ temperature and the lights shut off if they were left on. This saves you money and time. You’re also not sacrificing comfort because when you are near home, the thermostat readjusts to a comfortable temperature, the lights come on and the door unlocks for you.

Your smart home on the lookout for water damage

Smart devices can help protect your property. For example, a water sensor can alert you that a pipe is leaking in your second home hours away.

A smart home can go further and respond proactively. When the water sensor is triggered the platform immediately commands a connected water valve in the basement to shut off the home’s water.

And that’s just the beginning. While the standalone device offers value in each case, the platform is the key to multiplying their value and solving complex, real-life challenges for homeowners.

Savvy homeowners want to take advantage of every available tax deduction. Wondering if your security system qualifies? The answer is maybe!

Is my Home Security System Tax Deductible?

If your home security system is only used to secure personal property only, it falls under the IRS’ list of nondeductible expenses.

Home Office

However, if you claim a home office or use your home for a business like a child care facility, you may also be able to claim a portion of your home security system. As with most home office expenses, you must regularly and exclusively use the home office for business. If your home business is a daycare, there are other requirements as the portion of the home doesn’t have to be exclusively used for business.

The Fine Print

The IRS states that if you “install a security system that protects all the doors and windows of your home, you can deduct the business part of the expenses you incur to maintain and monitor the system. You also can take a depreciation deduction for the part of the cost of the security system relating to the business use of your home.” Since the tricky part of this is the exclusivity for business, please discuss in detail with your accountant or tax advisor.

Because your alarm system is professionally monitored, this cost also falls into the umbrella of your home security system tax deduction according to Safewise. Read the full Safewise article here.

Of course our expertise is security and life safety, so please confirm all information in this article with your chosen tax professional!

More Savings

We’re looking to help you save money in other ways. Our Customer Loyalty Rewards program offers big savings to current customers towards upgrading your current home security system.

Did you know you may qualify for home insurance discounts due to your monitored security system? Check with your home insurance carrier for all the details.

Just like medical professionals suggest you get a periodic physical to identify possible issues with your health, we recommend periodic testing of your alarm system, at least annually but even as often as monthly.

Tested Your Alarm System Lately?

The Importance of Testing your Alarm System

Just like medical professionals suggest you get a periodic physical to identify possible issues with your health, we recommend periodic testing of your alarm system, at least annually but even as often as monthly.

We highly recommend testing your system immediately if you have:

  1. Recently changed phone service or had any phone service done on your home.
  2. Switched to an internet phone service like Vonage or Magic Jack.
  3. Cancelled your landline to use only your cell phone.
  4. Haven’t tested your security system in the last year.

This test will cover two important system communication checks:

  1. Make sure that the alarm hardware in your home or office is communicating to the panel properly.
  2. Make sure that your alarm system communication to the Central Monitoring Station is working properly.

Testing Your System is Easy

Before you test your system, make sure to let us know you plan on testing it.

  1. Call our office at 410-546-2210 and listen for the prompt to test your system. Be ready with your Account ID or passcode.
  2. The operator will ask you for your address and the Account ID. Next, the operator will ask how long you would like the system on test. You can either tell them a span of time (like one hour, for example) where the system will automatically send signals again after that span of time or tell them you’ll call back when you’re done to put the system live again.
  3. Now that your system is set to test mode your alarm will sound and Central Monitoring Station will get the signals, but they will NOT contact the authorities since they know this is just a test.
  4. Arm your system.
  5. Walk around your home or office and test each device and let the alarm sound for about one minute. So, open the window and make sure the system goes into alarm using the keypad display and/or your siren. Reset the alarm and move to the next device.
  6. Once your testing is complete, call the Central Monitoring Station back and make sure the signals were received.

You have now tested your system! As always, our service professionals are here 24/7 to answer any questions you may have.

Who is on your Security System Call List?

This is a great time to think about who is contacted when your alarm sounds. You created your call list when we initially installed your system. Do you remember who is on your call list?

Many of our customers set their call list more than twenty years ago! We recommend checking your call list at least every couple of years to be sure the information is up to date. Remember to have your Account ID or Passcode handy when you call our office, or complete this online form so we can validate your identity.

Best Practices

We recommend listing yourself and any close neighbors or family you trust to be able to check on your property at any time or the day or night.

Each person on your call list should:

  • Be trained in the operation of your system.
  • Be able to access the protected building(s) on your property.
  • Know the code to arm and disarm your system.
  • Know the system Passcode or Account ID.

Passcode vs. Account ID

Your passcode is a single word designated by you that is able to declare a false alarm. Your Account ID is a unique series of numbers and letters provided to you on installation day on black and white cards the size of a business card. Keep this Account ID safe as knowledge of this ID will allow the bearer to make any changes or updates to your account by calling our office or completing this online form. If you haven’t assigned an account passcode or if you don’t remember what it is, just call our office with your Account ID and we can either remind you or change it: 410-546-2210.

Daylight Saving Time and Your System

Daylight Saving Time is here once again. Follow these quick tips to make sure your security, video, access and fire equipment stay up to date.

Your Security System

Your security system records alarms and events, so it’s important that your system’s internal clock is accurate. If you use our suite of interactive services, your system will update automatically and you don’t need to lift a finger. If your system is monitored by a standard telephone line, you may need to update the time manually. All systems are a little different, so if you don’t have your manual handy, call our office and our team can walk you through updating the time on your panel.

Smarter Security Your Alarm System Panel

Video & Access Control

As with your security system, video and access control equipment has an internal clock and the time may need to be set manually to make sure your event recording displays the correct time. If you aren’t sure what to do, just call our team and we will walk you through it.

Fire & Life Safety

The Consumer Product Safety Commission urges annual battery replacement at Daylight Savings Time for all electrician-installed or DIY smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. If your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors are monitored by Alarm Engineering, don’t worry about guessing when the batteries are low as we will alert you with a text, email or phone call. If you don’t want to get that phone call (which can happen any time of the day or night) when your batteries are low, we can update your account to send you a text or email alert for non-dispatch events like low battery alerts. Click here to update online or call our office with your Account ID and we will be happy to update your account preferences.

No matter what type of fire or security system you have, we always recommend testing your system on a regular basis. If we are monitoring your equipment, call our office and we can put your system on test and walk you through the process: 410-546-2210.

Alarm Engineering recently donated a security system to Salisbury Urban MinistriesHelping Delmarva Update – Salisbury Urban Ministries

Recently, Alarm Engineering donated and installed a security system at Salisbury Urban Ministries after a break-in they experienced. Salisbury Urban Ministries services Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset counties and their Mission is to develop and implement programs that serve and minister to the needs of materially impoverished people and to promote concern for racial understanding and appreciation of all people regardless of their economic condition.

If you haven’t heard of them, SUM began in 1992 after clergy and laity met together to develop programs for the community’s materially impoverished. SUM became a United Way Agency in 2000 and received the Community Foundation’s Richard A. Henson Foundation Award for Excellence in 2001. In June of 2011, SUM received the Kim Jefferson Award for outstanding urban ministry.

If you want to learn more or submit your donation request to Alarm Engineering’s Helping Delmarva program.

Systems Specialist Lee Smith worked closely with Salisbury Urban Ministries to ensure the system met their needs.

Project Spotlight: Video Upgrade Riverside Pharmacy

Long-time customer Riverside Pharmacy needed an upgrade to their current analog surveillance systems. We were thrilled to provide a new IP camera solution that uses their existing cabling infrastructure and gives the IP video they were looking for. Most IP cameras are compatible with CAT 5 or 6 networking cables, so all new cables usually need to be run when a customer wanted to upgrade to IP video. Now, with this exiting state of the art technology, we were able to provide an IP solution to Riverside Pharmacy while saving them money.

Here’s what Melissa at Riverside Pharmacy said about her recent upgrade experience:

“WOW! thanks Alarm Engineering, Inc. and Ron Boltz for our new hi-def cameras. This technology dramatically improves resolution and uses our old coax cable, minimizing labor and equipment costs. Winning!”
