Watch out for this recent phone scam, says the FCC

Phone Scam Alert: Don’t Say ‘Yes’

You may recall the Verizon commercial “Can you hear me now?”, but according to the Federal Communications Commission, if you’re asked if you can hear someone on the phone, it may be a scam.

According to the FCC, the scam begins as soon as you answer your phone. A person or a recording on the other end asks “Can you hear me?” and you respond “Yes”.

That “yes” response can provide a voice signature to be used later by the scammers to authorize fraudulent charges over the phone.

Scam victims have reported that these callers have impersonated employees of service organizations that may be familiar, such as a mortgage lender or utility. Others have reported the caller sounds like a young person, giggling when they answer the phone saying ” Oh, I didn’t expect you to pick up! Can you hear me?”.

If you receive this type of call, do not respond and immediately hang up, says the FCC. If you remember receiving a call like this recently and you think you may have said “yes”, keep a close eye on your statements over the next several months for unauthorized charges.

Phone Scam Tips

  1. If you answer and the caller (often a recording) asks you to hit a button to stop receiving calls, just hang up. Scammers often use these tricks to identify, and then target, live respondents.
  2. If you receive a scam call, write down the number and file a complaint with the FCC so they can help identify and take appropriate action to help consumers targeted by illegal callers.
  3. Ask your phone service provider if it offers a robocall blocking service. If not, encourage your provider to offer one. You can also visit the FCC’s website for information and resources on available robocall blocking tools to help reduce unwanted calls.
  4. Consider registering all of your telephone numbers in the National Do Not Call Registry.

Part of the integrated Smart Home is awareness that benefits you in ways you may not have considered.

Real-Time Awareness = Peace of Mind

Part of the integrated Smart Home is awareness that benefits you in ways you may not have considered.

You already know contact sensors work for doors and windows. You may not know that same technology can be used for so much more. Next, you and your family have patterns; times you leave for work, school and activities. Your security system is smart enough to learn what may be out of the ordinary and give you a heads up.

What is a Contact Sensor?

Let’s take a step back and talk about what contact sensors are and how they work. Contact sensors tell your security system if something is open or closed.

A single contact sensor is made of two pieces: one installed on the movable feature (like the door) and one on the stationary feature (like the door jamb). When it’s opened and the pieces move apart, the sensor signals ‘open’ to your security system.

Contact sensors were created to trigger the alarm – to sound the alarm if the ‘open’ signal is sent when the alarm is set. Contact sensors will also warn you if you try to arm the system while a contact is open or separated.

In an Alarm Engineering Smart Home, those contact sensors can serve a much greater role.

The sensor’s open or closed status can send you real-time alerts so you know when something is open or closed around your home. These are easy to customize, so you can set them up to get the exact information you want. For example, you can get an alert if a window is open when you to go bed, or if you leave home without closing the back door.

But they can do so much more.

Because contact sensors are wireless, you can put them on almost anything you want to keep tabs on. Here are some examples:

  • Protect valuables: place one on a safe at home or on your jewelry box so you always know when those areas are accessed or if you just forgot to close it.
  • Protect the yard: receive an alert if someone opens the gate to your yard or accesses the pool gate.
  • Protect food: get a real-time alert if one of the kids left the freezer door open.
  • Protect off limit areas: your gun cabinet or where you store harmful chemicals like paint thinner is a perfect area to monitor closely.

Your security system gets to know your everyday patterns and can let you know if something out of the ordinary is happening.

Unexpected Activity

These proactive notifications take intelligent protection to the next level. If you have little ones or aging parents, Unexpected Activity notifications can help. Your security system powered by alarm.com gets to know your everyday patterns and can let you know if something out of the ordinary is happening. Here are some areas where these Unexpected Activity alert can save the day:

  • External doors: your doors probably see lots of activity on weekdays. But if your curious four-year old is opening the door at 6am on a weekend, your Unexpected Activity alert lets you know.
  • Medicine cabinet: if you have young children, you want to know if they are accessing an area that may be harmful. If you have an aging parent, you may want to be sure they are taking their medication on schedule.
  • Top of the stairs: little ones can wander at night if they aren’t feeling well, had a bad dream or just are looking for some fun. If their bedroom is near the stairs you can be alerted before a potential tumble.
  • Door to garage: the garage area may be off-limits to your kids, but they might still be tempted. This area is likely busy during the weekends, but if you have a curious little one heading out there on a weekday, get an alert right away.

If you’re already an Alarm Engineering customer, upgrading your system to Smart Home technology is a breeze! DIY Smart Home? Most Users Want More

Are you thinking about upgrading to a Smart Home, but overwhelmed by all that’s involved? You’re not alone.

Unlike the Smart Home’s first wave of users—those uber tech-savvy ‘early adopters’—most homeowners are a little nervous about buying, installing, and configuring smart home technology without expert help. In fact, 83 percent of you would consider relying on a smart home professional.

The good news is that we were the first to bring integrated Smart Home technologies to the Shore and we’re ready to help. We can make sure you enjoy the security and convenience that an integrated smart home solution provides and frees you up to get back to the rest of your Honey Do list.

Choosing our team is a better approach to your Smart Home. We offer both full service professional installation and a hybrid DIY approach. If you are interested in DIY security, we can get you started and our team is here to help if you experience any issues with set up.

Smart Home Technology Can be Challenging to Set Up

Using Smart Home technology is easy and convenient, but setting it up can be anything but. Like anything that has to be wired or fixed into your home, installing smart home devices can be a challenge. Configuring them can be even harder, especially if you buy different devices that don't integrate easily.

Using Smart Home technology is easy, but setting it up can be anything but. Like anything that has to be wired or fixed into your home, installing smart home devices can be a challenge. Configuring them can be even harder, especially if you buy different devices that don’t integrate easily.

Our installation professionals are experts at the electrical wiring, installation and troubleshooting required to set up integrated smart home features.  In addition installing your devices physically, they’ll also quickly configure every device with Alarm.com’s smart home security platform so your experience is as seamless as possible.

Don’t Waste Time with Store Returns

Don't Waste Time with Store Returns

Our team doesn’t leave you to go it alone once your system is installed. We’re always on hand to help if you have any questions. Because smart home technology becomes part of your home’s infrastructure once installed, that’s important.

If one of your devices doesn’t work the way it should, for example, we will work with you to troubleshoot and fix it remotely. If that’s not possible, a technician will come to your house. You won’t need to troubleshoot things yourself, and you’ll never find yourself having to uninstall an essential device—say, your thermostat, in midwinter—and ship it off to get repaired.

Smart Home Professionals At Your Service

Alarm Engineering has been here for more than thirty years and we’ll be here when you need us. Full service means we treat our customers like neighbors, not numbers. In fact, our management team believes you should have access to a live person ready to help 24/7.

Using the 5 D's of Home Security, here are some ways to achieve both increased security and beautiful, friendly curb appeal.

Secure Your Yard with the 5D’s of Home Security

For many homeowners, the front yard is a challenging area to keep secure.

By design, the front yard is a semi-public area between your home and the street. If you’re like most of us, you care about your home’s curb appeal and aren’t interested in extreme security measures, but there still are discreet steps you can take to make your front yard and ultimately your home more secure.

Using the 5 D’s of Home Security, here are some ways to achieve both increased security and friendly curb appeal.

Deter

  • A professionally monitored smart home security system is perhaps the most powerful deterrent of all, and well-placed new yard signs are a great way to announce your security system. Do you need new yard signs or decals for windows? Let us know here, replacements are always free.
  • While most of its technology will reside in your home, several elements will be noticeable from the outside. These include outdoor video camerasor a video doorbell—and smart locks for your doors.
  • After dark, lighting is an excellent deterrent. Focus on a few key areas for lighting: your front door and porch, plus any potential hiding places in your hard.
  • Motion activated smart lighting, with its power to suddenly and startlingly put an intruder in the spotlight, is best of all. Smart lights are easy to have installed on your front porch and around your whole property as part of a smart home security system, which can also schedule the lights to turn on automatically at sunset.

Detect

  • Your monitored security system is an important part of the detection of people up to no good.
  • Video cameras integrated into your security system are excellent detection devices as well. You can get a video clip sent right to your smartphone or peek in at any time. With recording on the cloud, there’s no worries about a bad guy destroying the DVR evidence in your home. You might be able to save on your video upgrade with our Customer Loyalty Rewards.

Deny

  • Nothing radiates curb appeal like a traditional, white picket fence. Yet, it’s also a signal that says, loud and clear: “My property starts here.”
  • Gates are easily climbed. However, bad guys typically go for the easiest target and don’t want to be seen climbing or even jumping a fence. They’ll also be aware that they’ll look suspicious on the other side, and that the slatted design of the fence leaves nowhere to hide from passers-by.

Delay

  • A clear, well-maintained path to your front door—ideally bordered with shrubs or flowers—sends a message to stay on the path.
  • It’s an example of ‘natural access control,’ where landscaping is used not to physically block people, but to subtly discourage certain behavior. Look at the front of any public building and you’ll see it in action.
  • Another effective technique is to strategically plant roses, hawthorns and other thorny shrubs around ground-floor windows. Again, this won’t keep out a determined intruder, but it will discourage an opportunistic one from peering into your home. Plus, those roses will complement your picket fence.

Defend

  • Sometimes referred to as the response layer, this is where the police come in, notified by your 24/7 monitored security system – they catch the bad guys (or more often, run them off).
  • Make sure your monitored security system is working flawlessly by testing your system regularly.

Summer means many kids will be spending more time at home without direct supervision. That means fun for them, but often some apprehension for you.

Summer Safety & Security Tips: Kids Home Alone

Summer means many kids may be spending more time at home without direct supervision. That means fun for them, but often some apprehension for you.

Consider these Summer Safety & Security tips for kids home alone:

Emergencies

  1. Create and review an emergency plan so kids feel confident about what to do. Make sure kids know what the smoke or security alarm sounds like and what to do when a central station operator calls.
  2. Make a list of important phone numbers including how to reach you and a family member living close by or a trusted neighbor.
  3. Make sure they know where to find flashlights and batteries if there is a power outage.
  4. In the event of a tornado, make sure kids know that the safest place to take cover is the basement. If you don’t have a basement, they should go to an inside room without windows on the lowest floor, says the CDC.
  5. Review how and when to use 911.

Strangers

  1. You never know who is going to show up at the door. Kids may not be confident about who they should or shouldn’t talk to.
  2. Remind your children that if they don’t know the person at the door, they shouldn’t open it. Make it easy with a doorbell camera so you can talk directly with anyone who rings the doorbell right from your smartphone or tablet, as if you were home.

Security

  1. Make sure the kids know to keep the doors and windows locked when they are home alone. Review the security system and its’ use.
  2. Consider the addition of an Image Sensor or live video in the home so you can peek in and check on them from anywhere.
  3. Set up no-show alerts if the children are to be home at a certain time, so you get an alert if they aren’t home on time
  4. Check in on your kids while you’re at work with our Interactive Services on your smartphone and see for yourself that they are safe and sound at home. Get real-time emails and text messages when they go in and out so you know when they left and returned.

Don’t spend your summer worrying. Arm your kids with these important security tips and you can breathe easy. Read on for more important summer safety tips for kids here.
