Holiday Security Tips for your Business

Holiday Security Tips aren’t just for homeowners. Make sure you follow these holiday security tips to keep your business running smoothly during the holidays.

  1. Update us with your special holiday hours. If you use our supervised open and close service, we’re letting you know if employees are coming and going outside the open and close times you specify. Let us know if your hours have changed during the holidays so we won’t send you needless alerts. If you use our Commercial Alarm.com service, you can update these times yourself by logging in to your account
  2. Make sure your call list is current. If the alarm sounds, make sure the correct people are contacted. Call our office to review who is on your call list today 410-546-2210 or update them using our call list update form.
  3. Doublecheck your video system. If your have a video monitoring system, make sure that it is working properly before you close up for the holidays. If you don’t have a video monitoring system at the office today, give us a call for complete our form below for a free consultation.
  4. Reduce false alarms. Many businesses decorate to celebrate the holiday. Make sure that your decorations aren’t blocking your video cameras. If you have motion detectors, make sure no decorations are moving or could be moved when the heat comes on.
  5. Be on your guard. Seasonal employees are a must for many businesses during the holidays. An access control system can make sure only certain employees can access special areas. Access control also means it’s easy to give seasonal employees access to the building and terminate that access when the holiday rush is over.
  6. Test your system. We always recommend testing your system on a regular basis, including your panic buttons. Be sure to call us at 410-546-2210 before you begin testing your system so we don’t alert the authorities!

Halloween is fun for kids of all ages, but also presents some safety and security challenges – for kids and adults too. Even if you’re not planning on heading out for trick-or-treat with little ones, you can’t miss these tips.

Halloween Safety Tips for All

Halloween is fun for kids of all ages, but also presents some unique safety and security challenges – for kids and adults alike. Even if you’re not planning on heading out for trick-or-treat with little ones, you can’t miss these tips.

Guard Against ‘Pranks’

Vehicles are nearly twice as likely to be vandalized on Halloween as on an average day, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute. To avoid having your car egged, damaged, or even stolen, park it in a secure garage or a safe, well-lit area. Double check that car doors are locked and windows are up. If you have video near your driveway or home, make sure the vehicle is in view.

Be Cautious and Observant

Drive slowly and be on the lookout for ‘creatures’ that seem to come out of nowhere, especially when driving in residential areas. Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. Don’t hesitate to use your horn if you’re concerned that trick-or-treaters may not see you coming.

Lights, Camera, Action

Lots of lights outside your home an essential part of any home security plan every day of the year. On Halloween, lighting also increases the safety of guests and trick or treaters near your home. If you aren’t going to be home, you can turn lights on or schedule lighting to make it look like you’re home right from your smartphone. Make sure walkways and stairs are clear of debris and well-lit to help prevent slips, trips and falls. Please do not use candles – kids with flowing costumes can easily get too close. In your Jack-O-Lantern, always opt for flameless candles.

Make sure your cameras are working properly and make sure outside cameras are clean and free of cobwebs. Speaking of cameras, pausing your video rules during peak trick-or-treater traffic can help save clips and needless alerts.

Keep Costumes Safe

Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and choose bright colors for costumes if possible. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Party Prep

Hosting a party? Keep a close eye on party guests. Depending on local laws, you could be liable for injuries that partygoers cause to themselves or others while still at your party or driving home. Serve non-alcoholic beverages and food along with your preferred potion. Stop serving alcohol at least one hour before the party ends.

Project Spotlight: Video Upgrade Riverside Pharmacy

Long-time customer Riverside Pharmacy needed an upgrade to their current analog surveillance systems. We were thrilled to provide a new IP camera solution that uses their existing cabling infrastructure and gives the IP video they were looking for. Most IP cameras are compatible with CAT 5 or 6 networking cables, so all new cables usually need to be run when a customer wanted to upgrade to IP video. Now, with this exiting state of the art technology, we were able to provide an IP solution to Riverside Pharmacy while saving them money.

Here’s what Melissa at Riverside Pharmacy said about her recent upgrade experience:

“WOW! thanks Alarm Engineering, Inc. and Ron Boltz for our new hi-def cameras. This technology dramatically improves resolution and uses our old coax cable, minimizing labor and equipment costs. Winning!”

Video is Burglar’s Kryptonite

“Makers of movies and TV shows have it all wrong”, says Walter T. Shaw, retired from the most infamous burglary ring in America. Rarely do thieves wear president-look alike masks, pantyhose or any face coverings at all to pull a job.  Many times, they don’t even wear gloves.

“Thieves are arrogant; they don’t think they’ll be caught. And they’re not the least bit worried that a neighbor will be able to get a good enough look to give a description to the cops,” Shaw says.

However, Shaw shares their Achilles’ heel:  “They don’t have the time — or in many cases the talent — to disable surveillance systems. And they don’t want video surveillance of them rummaging through your home winding up in the cops’ hands or worse, on the evening news for their own neighbor to finger them.”

Video monitoring is a crook’s kryptonite, so make sure you protect your home and business using video. Shaw says burglars don’t know where the video is being recorded, since many video solutions today offer secure, cloud-based recording (with no recorder in the home or business to destroy) they’re likely to pass right on by. The footage could be captured offsite, so the moment they enter the home, it’s too late. They’ve been caught on candid camera,” Shaw says.
