WBOC reports that the Salisbury Police Department is investigating multiple vehicle break-ins that took place recently. Break-ins were reported near Marley Manor Apartments and the Salisbury University student housing. According to police, some of these vehicles were unlocked.
Don’t tempt a Burglar. If you must leave valuables in your vehicle, hide them. Even car chargers indicate that you might have something worth stealing in your vehicle, so hide those as well.
Hide before you drive. Thieves will stake out parking lots to watch what you put in the trunk of the car. So if you must place anything valuable there, try to do so before you leave home.
Stay visible. Park in well-lit, busy areas of a parking lot whenever possible.
Turn it off! A surprising 1/3 of motorists admit to leaving their vehicle running while unoccupied. Even more break-ins are for vehicles that are not locked. Turn your car off and lock it every single time.

HVAC unit thefts are on the rise according to the Salisbury Police Department. Here at Alarm Engineering, our call volume for HVAC related thefts is on the rise not only in Salisbury, but in neighboring communities as well.
HVAC units are largely unprotected and being outside, they are surprisingly easy to steal in less than five minutes. Costing several thousands of dollars, this is a huge loss for a home or business owner.
So, what options are available to thwart theft of your HVAC unit? Steel cages can be built around the units that are bolted to the concrete slab, but these fixtures are costly and an eyesore.
Here at Alarm Engineering, the same monitoring technology you enjoy at your home or business can be extended to protect your HVAC unit as well. Contact us now to learn how you can protect yourself against this rising threat.

Alarm Engineering, WMDT, the Henson Foundation and the Salisbury Police partnered to design and deploy an enterprise level surveillance system in the downtown area at no cost to the city or taxpayer. The goals: to capture specific areas of concern, provide a real-time live feed viewable from Salisbury Police Dispatch, provide access to live and recorded video for police and end users (WMDT and Henson Foundation for the first phase), and build a scalable infrastructure that easily accommodates additional cameras and end users. Current (and future) end users have access to video from the cameras on their respective buildings, while the police have access to all the cameras on the network.
In December of 2011, soon after the cameras were deployed, the system was put to the test when a large fight broke out downtown. Hundreds of people were seen leaving a nightclub (no longer in business), engaging in the large brawl. Salisbury Police were monitoring the cameras real-time from their headquarters and the first officer arrived within two minutes. This video can be seen here on our YouTube channel.
The system can be expanded by adding cameras on other downtown buildings or properties, but other possible future expansions include free public Wi-Fi hotspots and secure law enforcement network access points. Such access points allow officers to log in in to their department resources without incurring the costs of a cellular data carrier, saving both the city and department money.
