HVAC unit thefts are on the rise according to the Salisbury Police Department. Here at Alarm Engineering, our call volume for HVAC related thefts is on the rise not only in Salisbury, but in neighboring communities as well.
HVAC units are largely unprotected and being outside, they are surprisingly easy to steal in less than five minutes. Costing several thousands of dollars, this is a huge loss for a home or business owner.
So, what options are available to thwart theft of your HVAC unit? Steel cages can be built around the units that are bolted to the concrete slab, but these fixtures are costly and an eyesore.
Here at Alarm Engineering, the same monitoring technology you enjoy at your home or business can be extended to protect your HVAC unit as well. Tell us a bit about you and find out how you can protect yourself against this rising threat.

A great time was had by all at Salisbury’s National Night Out celebration at City Park on Tuesday, August 6! Alarm Engineering and thirty other local organizations participated in this Salisbury Police Department event. Food, games, prizes, safety information and FUN were found at this free family friendly event, reinforcing solidarity between law enforcement and communities.
We gave away lots of free Safe Kids ID kits, which include safety games and information for kids and parents, a fingerprint kit and even a DNA collection kit. If you would like a Safe Kids ID kit for the children in your life, just drop by our office, the kits are available in our lobby.

March 27, 2013 Salisbury, MD – The City of Salisbury has passed an ordinance changing the fees/fines charged for false alarms. Council members are on record stating to the news media that they have reduced the false alarm fees, however this is incorrect. Not only are the new fees higher, but they are also higher than virtually any other jurisdiction in the country.
82% of those subject to the fees will see a 155% increase in costs on average.
As shown below, the home or business that experiences a third false alarm sees a 392% increase in the fee/fine. Any location experiencing 3-10 false alarms will pay a higher fee than before. On the other end of the spectrum, those using/abusing the city’s resources the most, with 14 false alarms, receive a 42% discount.
In summation, the vast majority of those affected by a false alarm fee will pay more, significantly more. The very small number of people experiencing 11 or more false alarms in a year, are the only ones benefiting from a fee reduction, yet they are the ones putting the most strain on the city’s limited resources.
Giving “frequent flyer discounts” to those who have the most calls for service is totally contrary to the purpose of the fee/fine.
Escalating fee/fine structures like the one Salisbury had in place prior to this change, are in use in almost all jurisdictions across the country, are proven to significantly reduce the number of false alarms, and have been successfully defended in many courts.

Alarm Engineering, WMDT, the Henson Foundation and the Salisbury Police partnered to design and deploy an enterprise level surveillance system in the downtown area at no cost to the city or taxpayer.
The goals included capturing specific areas of concern, providing a real-time live feed viewable from Salisbury Police Dispatch, provide access to live and recorded video for police and end users (WMDT and Henson Foundation for the first phase), and building a scalable infrastructure that easily accommodates additional cameras and end users. Current (and future) end users have access to video from the cameras on their respective buildings, while the police have access to all the cameras on the network.
In December of 2011, soon after the cameras were deployed, the system was put to the test when a large fight broke out downtown. Hundreds of people were seen leaving a nightclub (no longer in business), engaging in the large brawl. Salisbury Police were monitoring the cameras real-time from their headquarters and the first officer arrived within two minutes.
The system can be expanded by adding cameras on other downtown buildings or properties, but other possible future expansions include free public Wi-Fi hotspots and secure law enforcement network access points. Such access points allow officers to log in in to their department resources without incurring the costs of a cellular data carrier, saving both the city and department money.
