This year’s NNO community celebration at Salisbury City Park was once again a success. Salisbury police and fire departments, along with many community business and groups provided demonstrations, games and giveaways for parents and kids, including 100 bicycles complete with helmets and Alarm Engineering bike locks! There was sun, music, food, and lots of fun.
The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, began an effort in 1985 to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods were organized and fighting back.
These days, National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August. Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more. This year in Salisbury, the bar was raised even higher with the inaugural Foot Pursuit in the Park 5k.
