Using the 5 D's of Home Security, here are some ways to achieve both increased security and beautiful, friendly curb appeal.

Secure Your Yard with the 5D’s of Home Security

For many homeowners, the front yard is a challenging area to keep secure.

By design, the front yard is a semi-public area between your home and the street. If you’re like most of us, you care about your home’s curb appeal and aren’t interested in extreme security measures, but there still are discreet steps you can take to make your front yard and ultimately your home more secure.

Using the 5 D’s of Home Security, here are some ways to achieve both increased security and friendly curb appeal.

Deter

  • A professionally monitored smart home security system is perhaps the most powerful deterrent of all, and well-placed new yard signs are a great way to announce your security system. Do you need new yard signs or decals for windows? Let us know here, replacements are always free.
  • While most of its technology will reside in your home, several elements will be noticeable from the outside. These include outdoor video camerasor a video doorbell—and smart locks for your doors.
  • After dark, lighting is an excellent deterrent. Focus on a few key areas for lighting: your front door and porch, plus any potential hiding places in your hard.
  • Motion activated smart lighting, with its power to suddenly and startlingly put an intruder in the spotlight, is best of all. Smart lights are easy to have installed on your front porch and around your whole property as part of a smart home security system, which can also schedule the lights to turn on automatically at sunset.

Detect

  • Your monitored security system is an important part of the detection of people up to no good.
  • Video cameras integrated into your security system are excellent detection devices as well. You can get a video clip sent right to your smartphone or peek in at any time. With recording on the cloud, there’s no worries about a bad guy destroying the DVR evidence in your home. You might be able to save on your video upgrade with our Customer Loyalty Rewards.

Deny

  • Nothing radiates curb appeal like a traditional, white picket fence. Yet, it’s also a signal that says, loud and clear: “My property starts here.”
  • Gates are easily climbed. However, bad guys typically go for the easiest target and don’t want to be seen climbing or even jumping a fence. They’ll also be aware that they’ll look suspicious on the other side, and that the slatted design of the fence leaves nowhere to hide from passers-by.

Delay

  • A clear, well-maintained path to your front door—ideally bordered with shrubs or flowers—sends a message to stay on the path.
  • It’s an example of ‘natural access control,’ where landscaping is used not to physically block people, but to subtly discourage certain behavior. Look at the front of any public building and you’ll see it in action.
  • Another effective technique is to strategically plant roses, hawthorns and other thorny shrubs around ground-floor windows. Again, this won’t keep out a determined intruder, but it will discourage an opportunistic one from peering into your home. Plus, those roses will complement your picket fence.

Defend

  • Sometimes referred to as the response layer, this is where the police come in, notified by your 24/7 monitored security system – they catch the bad guys (or more often, run them off).
  • Make sure your monitored security system is working flawlessly by testing your system regularly.

Summer means many kids will be spending more time at home without direct supervision. That means fun for them, but often some apprehension for you.

Summer Safety & Security Tips: Kids Home Alone

Summer means many kids may be spending more time at home without direct supervision. That means fun for them, but often some apprehension for you.

Consider these Summer Safety & Security tips for kids home alone:

Emergencies

  1. Create and review an emergency plan so kids feel confident about what to do. Make sure kids know what the smoke or security alarm sounds like and what to do when a central station operator calls.
  2. Make a list of important phone numbers including how to reach you and a family member living close by or a trusted neighbor.
  3. Make sure they know where to find flashlights and batteries if there is a power outage.
  4. In the event of a tornado, make sure kids know that the safest place to take cover is the basement. If you don’t have a basement, they should go to an inside room without windows on the lowest floor, says the CDC.
  5. Review how and when to use 911.

Strangers

  1. You never know who is going to show up at the door. Kids may not be confident about who they should or shouldn’t talk to.
  2. Remind your children that if they don’t know the person at the door, they shouldn’t open it. Make it easy with a doorbell camera so you can talk directly with anyone who rings the doorbell right from your smartphone or tablet, as if you were home.

Security

  1. Make sure the kids know to keep the doors and windows locked when they are home alone. Review the security system and its’ use.
  2. Consider the addition of an Image Sensor or live video in the home so you can peek in and check on them from anywhere.
  3. Set up no-show alerts if the children are to be home at a certain time, so you get an alert if they aren’t home on time
  4. Check in on your kids while you’re at work with our Interactive Services on your smartphone and see for yourself that they are safe and sound at home. Get real-time emails and text messages when they go in and out so you know when they left and returned.

Don’t spend your summer worrying. Arm your kids with these important security tips and you can breathe easy. Read on for more important summer safety tips for kids here.

3: Specify what your Scene will control.

After creating your button, you’ll see a list of all your system devices below.

For example, you may want this Scene to set the security system to Arm Stay, with the front door locked.

To include a device, check the circle to the left of it, then specify what you want the device to do.

If you like to stay cozy under a blanked, let’s turn the temperature down for this Scene too.

Movies require a blanket, so we're turning the temperature down for this Scene.

Of course the lights have to go off for the movie.

Finally, we're going to have the hallway and living room lights turn off, for perfect movie ambiance.

4: Use your new Scene!

Congratulations, you’ve created your first custom Scene! The next time you log into your security system app, you’ll be able to use it. Swipe left on the Scenes bar to find the new button, and tap once. One Button Home Control with Our highly rated free app gives you the ability to control your security and integrated smart home features from anywhere.

One Button Home Control

We’ve all wished for that one ‘magic’ button that took care of things around the house to save time. Well, that button is here.

Our highly rated free app gives you the ability to control your security and integrated smart home features from anywhere. If you don’t have access to your home or security system through our app, our Customer Loyalty Rewards may allow you to upgrade your system free.

What do Scenes do for me?

With our app, you have access to ‘Scenes‘. Scenes are actions you frequently take with your home grouped together so your home can respond with the touch of a button to your every command. Here are some examples…

  • Leaving the house? Tap the new ‘Away’ Scene and your security system can arm, your front door can lock, your garage can close and your thermostat can set back to save energy.
  • Ready for bed? Tap ‘Sleep’ Scene to have your thermostat dial down or switch to the bedroom temperature sensor for perfect comfort, lights can turn off, while your house secures itself for the night.
  • Home, Away, Sleep and Wake Up. Each scene is configured for a moment in the day where you need to adjust several things at once: arriving home, leaving the house, going to bed and getting up in the morning.

All four scenes are easy to tweak as you like. You can add a porch light to your Home scene or set your downstairs lights to turn off automatically when you tap the Sleep button.

Create Your Own Custom Scene

Want a button for one of your other frequent patterns? It’s easy to build your own scenes with commands for your security system, locks, garage door, smart lights, smart thermostats and even your smart water valve.

Just pick a name for your new scene—Dinner, Movie Night, or Kids Bedtime and more. Log into your account and select the devices and what you want them to do. Then, it will appear at the top of your app, ready to use. If you need help creating your new Scene, click here

Doorbell Video Security Camera

Yes, We Have the Doorbell Security Camera

There is so much activity around your front door. Now, you can take advantage of smart home technology that not only increases your security in this high-traffic area, but also is so convenient. Stay in total control of your front door from anywhere with a touchless video doorbell.

Video doorbells have increased in popularity over the past couple of years because of their versatility and broad range of uses. As soon as someone is detected at your door, you’ll get a mobile alert, and the doorbell will start recording a video clip. This means you’ll always know when a delivery has made it to your front door.

The smart doorbell camera can be completely integrated into your smart home security system, letting you see who’s at the door whether you’re home or not, have a two-way audio conversation with visitors through your Alarm.com app, and even unlock your front door’s smart lock from that same screen.

Video Doorbell Camera Powered by Alarm.com

Once installed, this smart doorbell can also be a smart home security camera, able to record and send you motion-detected or doorbell-activated clips. This new security camera can also send you clips triggered by other devices like your garage door. The smart doorbell motion sensor can also trigger other devices, such as your porch lighting, to deter potential intruders.

Professionally installed and configured by our team and completely integrated into your Alarm Engineering smart home, this technology is available now!

The doorbell camera isn’t the only thing that’s new. Even more features have been integrated with the Alarm Engineering’s Alarm.com platform.

Revolutionary One Button Home Control

You now have access to ‘Scenes’ in the Alarm.com app. Scenes are actions you frequently take with your home grouped together so your home can respond with the touch of a button to your every command. Here are some examples:

No problem, easily build your Movie Scene, and your system can turn off the lights, lock the door, set the alarm system to Stay with one click on the app. Click here to learn more and here for a quick how-to for building your own custom Scenes.

Aggressive Door-to-Door Alarm Sales teams may be swarming your neighborhood soon. You may be surprised to learn many of these "seasonal" companies target homes that already have security signs in the yard.

Guard Against These 5 Door-to-Door Alarm Scams

Aggressive Door-to-Door Alarm Sales teams may be swarming your neighborhood soon. You may be surprised to learn many of these “seasonal” companies target homes that already have security signs in the yard. Many agencies including the Federal Trade Commission, States Attorney and other state officials urge caution when approached by a door to door alarm representative.

Here are some examples of the tactics these companies use to scam homeowners. Remember, we are here to help with any question you have.

  1. “Alarm Engineering is in your neighborhood today offering free system upgrades.”
  2. “This is a limited time upgrade offer. You MUST sign up RIGHT NOW to get your upgrade.”
  3. “Alarm Engineering has gone out of business or sold out to us.”
  4. “Our computer has detected a glitch in your system and we’re here to check it.”
  5. “We are General Electric Security.”

Our team will never show up to your home unannounced.

Now that we’ve introduced you to some common ways these companies gain entry into your home, here are some details to keep in mind. If you are ever unsure if the person at your home is really from Alarm Engineering, call our office to verify at 410-546-2210.

“Alarm Engineering is in your neighborhood today offering free system upgrades.”

Scam artists who use this approach will sign you up with an entirely different company. Alarm Engineering respects your time and our team members NEVER arrive at your home unannounced. Call us at 410-546-2210 if someone tries this or any alarm scam at your door.

“This is a limited time upgrade offer. You MUST sign up RIGHT NOW to get your upgrade.”

We don’t believe in high pressure tactics and never tell you to “sign right now.” We do offer free Customer Loyalty Rewards upgrades that offer the added security of cellular connectivity, remote access with free apps, lights, locks, video (including doorbell cameras) and more. Give us a call to discuss all your options at 410-546-2210.

“Alarm Engineering has gone out of business or sold out to us.”

Again, if another company tries to convince you that Alarm Engineering has been sold, give our office a call right away. We have been locally owned since 1985 and we plan on sticking around to serve our customers for years to come. 410-546-2210

“Our computer has detected a glitch in your system and we’re here to check it.”

Slick scammers claiming to be remote access technicians from reading your yard sign may tell you “the company computer” has noticed recent glitches in your system and they’ve been sent to repair it. Their goal: To con you into letting them into your house on the pretext of “fixing” or “examining” the existing security device. In fact, they’re tampering with the alarm system so they can return and burglarize your house or sign you up with a different company.

If there is an issue with your system that we detect, our team will contact you and look to set an appointment time that works for you, not just show up claiming it needs to be repaired. If you ever are concerned that your system isn’t working right, give us a call to troubleshoot it. Also, we highly recommend you test your system regularly.

“We are General Electric.”

These people coming to your door may even have GE logos on their clothing. They are not GE Security. Legitimate manufacturer representatives will not arrive at your home to make any changes to your system. The Alarm Engineering team provides all your service directly.

The Real Deal

We appreciate you trusting Alarm Engineering with your home or business security needs. Customer Loyalty Rewards offers you up to $500 towards your system upgrade.

Since a worn yard sign is more likely to be targeted by such individuals, just let us know if you need replacements here

You might think that smart devices are the definition of a smart home. Smart devices are an important part of building a smart home, but some smart devices alone doesn't make a smart home.

Smart Devices are Only a Part of The Smart Home

You might think that smart devices are the definition of a smart home. Smart devices are an important part of building a smart home, but some smart devices alone doesn’t make a smart home.

So what makes a home smart?

The Coach

Think of your favorite sports team. Each player has important and specialized skills, but they can only win games by working together.

The foundation of a good team is the coach. Throughout the game, the coach gets information from players and assistants to understand the big picture of what’s happening on the field. With this information, he can call the plays and makes sure each player contributes.

The true smart home has such a coach: your security system. Your security system controls every device in the home. It gathers intelligence from around the home and coordinates actions to make the home safer, smarter and more efficient.

You might not see what’s happening behind the scenes, but you will definitely notice the unique features and value that only a security-controlled smart home can deliver.

Your smart home using integrated video

Video monitoring is a popular smart home security solution. Standalone smart cameras record motion-triggered clips of activity in the home and send them to the homeowner, providing valuable awareness of what’s going on.

An integrated video system can do more. The security system can tell the platform who disarmed the system or where important activity is happening, such as someone entering the back door. With this information the platform intelligently directs the camera to capture important activity and then alerts you with a video clip on your smart phone.

When the homeowner disarms the system, the camera doesn’t record. The platform enhances awareness when you’re away and privacy when you’re home.

Your smart home sensing opportunities to save energy

A standalone smart thermostat knows when you walk in front of it. But that’s not a lot of information to decide whether it should make the entire home comfortable, or set back to save energy.

A smart home can trigger energy saving opportunities depending on where you are. For example, if you’re away the thermostat can automatically change to the ‘away’ temperature and the lights shut off if they were left on. This saves you money and time. You’re also not sacrificing comfort because when you are near home, the thermostat readjusts to a comfortable temperature, the lights come on and the door unlocks for you.

Your smart home on the lookout for water damage

Smart devices can help protect your property. For example, a water sensor can alert you that a pipe is leaking in your second home hours away.

A smart home can go further and respond proactively. When the water sensor is triggered the platform immediately commands a connected water valve in the basement to shut off the home’s water.

And that’s just the beginning. While the standalone device offers value in each case, the platform is the key to multiplying their value and solving complex, real-life challenges for homeowners.

Savvy homeowners want to take advantage of every available tax deduction. Wondering if your security system qualifies? The answer is maybe!

Is my Home Security System Tax Deductible?

If your home security system is only used to secure personal property only, it falls under the IRS’ list of nondeductible expenses.

Home Office

However, if you claim a home office or use your home for a business like a child care facility, you may also be able to claim a portion of your home security system. As with most home office expenses, you must regularly and exclusively use the home office for business. If your home business is a daycare, there are other requirements as the portion of the home doesn’t have to be exclusively used for business.

The Fine Print

The IRS states that if you “install a security system that protects all the doors and windows of your home, you can deduct the business part of the expenses you incur to maintain and monitor the system. You also can take a depreciation deduction for the part of the cost of the security system relating to the business use of your home.” Since the tricky part of this is the exclusivity for business, please discuss in detail with your accountant or tax advisor.

Because your alarm system is professionally monitored, this cost also falls into the umbrella of your home security system tax deduction according to Safewise. Read the full Safewise article here.

Of course our expertise is security and life safety, so please confirm all information in this article with your chosen tax professional!

More Savings

We’re looking to help you save money in other ways. Our Customer Loyalty Rewards program offers big savings to current customers towards upgrading your current home security system.

Did you know you may qualify for home insurance discounts due to your monitored security system? Check with your home insurance carrier for all the details.

Save Time with Smart Home Technology

You’ve heard how Smart Home technology can be integrated with your security system to bring a new level of convenience and savings. But how about time? Our time is increasingly our most important commodity.

A recent survey by Coldwell Banker Real Estate and CNET finds the majority of Americans with Smart Homes say that these products do save them about $1,000 per year and an average of 30 minutes per day! Here are some of the ways Alarm Engineering can help:

Keep it Secure

How many times this month have you rushed out of the house in the morning and couldn’t remember if you locked your door? Have you ever left the neighborhood and wondered whether you remembered to close the garage door?  If you’re like most, you go back by to make sure it’s closed.

Not anymore. The Alarm Engineering smart phone app powered by Alarm.com lets you secure your home from anywhere with one touch of a button.

Don’t Wait Around to Let Visitors or Workers In

Allowing safe access to your home for a visitor or worker used to mean time sitting around the house waiting. With the Alarm.com mobile app, you can unlock your door from anywhere when your worker or guest arrives. If they are a trusted person in your home and will be coming again, you can easily create them a custom user code. It’s much faster and more secure than making and keeping track of spare keys.

Worry Less

Worry is always a sneaky time thief, especially when you’re trying to relax and enjoy yourself, like on vacation. 24/7 professional monitoring lets you enjoy your time away from home knowing all is well. Plus, with Alarm.com’s mobile app, you can peek in at any time and see for yourself that all is well.

Watching your Energy Bills

Smart devices make it possible for you to turn any appliance into a smart appliance. Just use Alarm.com’s Smart Plugs to turn your coffee pot, slow cooker or light on or off on demand or set up schedules. Turn your lights on and off and adjust your thermostat automatically when you come and go.

Setting up Smart Home Equipment

Don’t worry about setting up your own Smart Home, our installation professionals will install it for you, show you how to use it and test it before we leave.

Get Started and Save

If you’re already an Alarm Engineering customer, you can save money upgrading your system too with our Customer Loyalty Rewards. You can save up to $500 towards your upgrade. Many of our customers have received a free upgrade due to this program.
