Christmas Tree Safety Tips

For many of us, picking up and decorating a live Christmas Tree is a treasured holiday tradition. 

Use these tips and be fire smart:

• Only choose a tree with fresh, green needles that don’t fall off easily
• Be sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source including fireplaces, radiators, heat vents or lights
• Add water to your tree stand initially and water daily
• Check your lights!  Only use lights that have a label from an independent testing laboratory. Also, check whether are they specifically designed for indoor or outdoor use only.
• Replace any string of lights with worn/broken cords or loose bulbs and connect no more than three strands of mini string sets (double-check manufacturer’s instructions for LED strands)
• Always turn off Christmas Tree lights before leaving home or going to bed
• If  your tree dries out, dispose of it immediately – it is a danger and should not be left in your home or garage

Hanukkah Safety Tips

• Light the Menorah on a fire-resistant surface unreachable by pets and children. Never leave the candles burning unattended. Opt for electric candles to place in the window.
• When cooking with hot oil to fry potato latkes and sufganiyot, use splatter guards and oven mitts to protect your skin from oil burns. 
• In the event of an oil fire, turn off the heat and cover the pan with a lid. NEVER add water to an oil fire as water mixing with hot oil creates a dangerous hot steam.

Kwanzaa Safety Tips

• Keep the Kinara on a flat, fire-resistant surface away from children and pets.
• When placing the Kwanzaa items on the table, make sure the flammable items are kept at a safe distance from the Mishumaa Saba, especially when lighting.
• Opt for flame less candles, such as electric candles.

Turkey Fryer Safety

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and for many of us that means turkey! Deep fried turkey is a popular choice because it promises fantastic culinary results in a fraction of the cooking time but it is dangerous – even for the informed user. 

I’m sure it’s a warning you have heard before, but let’s talk about the details. 

Why is it so dangerous? 

• To start, it’s difficult to tell whether the bird is completely thawed – and even a little bit of ice meeting hot oil can produce a dangerous outcome. 
• Failing to monitor oil temperature and overfilling the oil are common mistakes. 
• You must fry the turkey outside! 
• Lastly, keep the fryer away from any combustible materials and never, under any circumstances, leave it unattended.

Watch Out for These 10 Holiday Scams

As charitable giving ramps up over the holidays, so do scams. Protect yourself this holiday with these tips:

1. Read before you click: phishing scams are increasingly “smart” and even look like a shipment tracking email.  
   • Before you click, the safer route is to go to the trusted shipping site and plug your tracking number in directly.
2. Watch out for fake charities. 
   • Make sure the charity you’re giving to is legitimate – do a quick search to make sure other’s online experiences have been good ones with the charity you’re considering.
3. Watch your statements closely. 
   • There are many ways criminals can steal your identity and credit/debit card numbers. Check your statements closely to ensure all purchases are legitimate.
4. With a quick bump or, more often these days, a distraction from an accomplice, criminals can remove your wallet from your pocket or purse in seconds and even take items from bags. 
   • Keep your wallet inside a closed purse or in a pocket with your hand on it. Leave non-essential identifying information and spare credit cards at home. Return frequently to your car to drop off purchases in the trunk and out of sight.
5. At the register, be aware of your receipt and change.
   • Be on the lookout for any unauthorized cash back from your debit card and make sure you received the correct change.
6. You see a parcel waiting notice on your door with a phone number to call; with so many deliveries this time of year you aren’t sure which parcel it might be.
   • Make sure this an 800 or a local call or else it might be a scam where you are charged exorbitant phone charges or you may be asked personal questions that lead to identity theft. Also be wary of parcel thieves, and look out for your neighbors as well.
7. Twice-used gift cards. Make sure gift cards you purchase are from reputable retailers and that the activation code is still secure. 
   • Some scammers will take activation codes from cards at the store and use them after they are loaded.
8. If you’re looking to book a vacation home for the holidays, be wary. Here are a number of red flags to look for in vacation home rental scams.
   • First, as always, if the price is too good to be true, it usually is just that – not true. Never send your payment by a wire transfer or a cashier’s check. Use a credit card, so you can retrieve your funds if the transaction is fraudulent.
9. You’ve won! These fake contest scams are increasingly common. 
   • It is impossible to win a contest you haven’t even entered. It is important to remember that no legitimate lottery charges you fees to claim your prize, nor ask for any personal information from you.
10. The grandparent scam is another one done throughout the year; however, it is more prevalent during the holidays when college-age grandchildren may be traveling. The scam starts with a phone call apparently from a grandchild who has encountered a medical or legal emergency and needs money immediately. Often the scammers get personal information to make the call sound legitimate through the child’s Facebook page or other social media.
    • A good way to be proactive is to have a secret word a child should use in an emergency situation. If the caller doesn’t know it, it is probably a scam.

Information is power when it comes to scams. Use caution and trust your gut – when something feels not right or out of the ordinary, stop and take a step back.

Video is Burglar’s Kryptonite

“Makers of movies and TV shows have it all wrong”, says Walter T. Shaw, retired from the most infamous burglary ring in America. Rarely do thieves wear president-look alike masks, pantyhose or any face coverings at all to pull a job.  Many times, they don’t even wear gloves.

“Thieves are arrogant; they don’t think they’ll be caught. And they’re not the least bit worried that a neighbor will be able to get a good enough look to give a description to the cops,” Shaw says.

However, Shaw shares their Achilles’ heel:  “They don’t have the time — or in many cases the talent — to disable surveillance systems. And they don’t want video surveillance of them rummaging through your home winding up in the cops’ hands or worse, on the evening news for their own neighbor to finger them.”

Video monitoring is a crook’s kryptonite, so make sure you protect your home and business using video. Shaw says burglars don’t know where the video is being recorded, since many video solutions today offer secure, cloud-based recording (with no recorder in the home or business to destroy) they’re likely to pass right on by. The footage could be captured offsite, so the moment they enter the home, it’s too late. They’ve been caught on candid camera,” Shaw says.

• Be careful what you post on social media about your vacation. Don’t advertise that you’re away!

• At the airport, keep a close eye on your luggage at all times. When going through security, put your laptop on the X-Ray conveyor belt last, so you have time to get through the metal detector and be waiting for it on the other side.
• Lost or stolen wallets often lead to identity theft. Carry only the cards and cash you plan on using during your trip.
• Do not carry your passport with you when out and about. Make a few photocopies and leave your original in the hotel safe. Leave a copy of your passport with a trusted friend at home, just in case. 
• Travel like a local. Avoid obvious actions that will make you stand out as a tourist. Dress in a similar style and know your surroundings. Plan your route in advance, so you have an idea where you are going and you don’t need to look at a map while walking through a busy area.

Protect Against Identity Theft Scams

During tax season, your accountant isn’t the only who is busy processing your information. Identity thieves are also staying busy. The IRS reported that identity theft investigations continue to rise. What can you do to protect yourself from threats to your identity?

• Never carry your social security card in your wallet. This number is the skeleton key to unlocking identity vulnerabilities if your wallet is falls into the wrong hands. Credit cards can be cancelled –  your social security card cannot.

• Be cautious of providing any information to phishing schemes. When you receive unsolicited emails or phone calls asking for any personal information from you, check the source before providing anything. Your bank, the IRS and your security company will not contact you via email and ask for your social security number, birth date or address.

• If you are contacted that you’ve won a contest you don’t recall entering and are required to give information to secure your winnings, be wary. The only ones winning these sweepstakes are identity thieves.

• Protect your child’s identity, too. One of the fastest growing segments of identity theft is the stealing of a child’s Social Security number, name and other identifying information. Often, it is a relative or a close friend of the child’s parents who steals the information to set up new credit or bank accounts. You may not know there is a problem until you try to get your child a driver’s license, open up a checking account for him or her, or apply for a student loan. You can pull a child’s credit history once he or she turns 13, and you should do that annually once your kids are teenagers.

Try These Tips

The best way to avoid a scam is to make sure you’re always in control of your money and personal financial information. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself according to the FBI:

1. Ask for a call-back number. If someone calls and says he or she is from your bank, credit card company, doctor’s office or another place with which you do business, tell the person you’re too busy to talk and ask for a phone number to call him or her back. If the individual says, “I’ll call you back at a more convenient time,” then hangs up, you can then call the doctor’s office, bank or credit card company and ask if they are trying to reach you for any reason.
2. Report the scam to the company in question. If it turns out that no one at the bank, credit card company or doctor’s office called you, you’ll know someone tried to pull a fast one. Ask for the department that monitors fraud and tell them what happened.
3. Report the scam to the FTC. While the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) won’t investigate individual complaints, it does catalog them and look for trends and large-scale fraud. You can file a complaint at ftc.gov. If the fraud involves the IRS (such as someone pretending to be from the IRS or if it involves children), you can call the Treasury Department directly to file a complaint.
4. Hang up. The easiest way to avoid a scam is to decline to give any personal information over the telephone to anyone. If someone hits you up for a contribution to a charity, ask them to mail you information instead.

2. Take away hiding spots. Most burglaries happen in the late afternoon so high shrubbery or bushes in front of windows are a perfect entry point for would-be burglars. Keep your landscaping nicely manicured to decrease the likelihood a burglar can stay concealed while trying to break in. 
3. Be a good neighbor. Keep on the lookout for your neighbor’s property and unusual behavior and ask your neighbors to do the same. Also create a neighborhood system where mail and newspapers are periodically collected so it’s not obvious that someone is away.
4. Reign in social medial posts about your location. Whether you’re posting updates about your cousin’s out of town wedding or date night, keep in mind burglars are now casing social media for easy targets who they know aren’t home.
