This year’s NNO community celebration at Salisbury City Park was once again a success. Salisbury police and fire departments, along with many community business and groups provided demonstrations, games and giveaways for parents and kids, including 100 bicycles complete with helmets and Alarm Engineering bike locks! There was sun, music, food, and lots of fun.
The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, began an effort in 1985 to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods were organized and fighting back.
These days, National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August. Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more. This year in Salisbury, the bar was raised even higher with the inaugural Foot Pursuit in the Park 5k.
In addition to the Alarm Engineering bike locks, we played Cuff the Burglar and gave Jr. Crimefighter badges. Alarm Engineering also gave away over 100 McGruff Safe Kids ID Kits, filled with informative and fun safety tips and games for kids and parents and a do-it-yourself fingerprint kit. If you would like kits for your little ones in your life, stop into our office during business hours and pick some up in our lobby free of charge.

Legislation was recently passed by the City of Salisbury with the purpose of lowering the penalties for false alarms and reducing false dispatches. Ordinance 2326 requires alarm companies to use Enhanced Call Verification (ECV), which is simply the process of calling two contacts prior to police dispatch. ECV is already in place in many other jurisdictions (including Delaware and Virginia) and is statistically proven to significantly reduce false dispatches without compromising service or increasing costs to security customers.
A. All central monitoring stations that handle residential or commercial intrusion and/or burglar alarm activations shall make two (2) phone calls in an attempt to verify the validity of any monitored alarm activation prior to calling the Salisbury Police Department to request a dispatch.
B. Alarm users have the option to opt out of the Enhanced Call Verification (ECV) Program. If an alarm company or alarm agent has received a written request from a verified alarm user to Opt Out of ECV, the alarm company or alarm agent is not required by this Chapter to provide ECV to any such alarm user.
Going forward, the central monitoring station will attempt to contact you at the first two phone numbers we have on file (typically the premise, and the first person on your call list) prior to dispatching the Salisbury Police. This requirement DOES NOT apply to fire alarm, hold-up, panic button, or duress code alarms. If we do NOT reach someone with the proper password at either of the two phone numbers, the police will then be dispatched.

WBOC reports that the Salisbury Police Department is investigating multiple vehicle break-ins that took place recently. Break-ins were reported near Marley Manor Apartments and the Salisbury University student housing. According to police, some of these vehicles were unlocked.
Don’t tempt a Burglar. If you must leave valuables in your vehicle, hide them. Even car chargers indicate that you might have something worth stealing in your vehicle, so hide those as well.
Hide before you drive. Thieves will stake out parking lots to watch what you put in the trunk of the car. So if you must place anything valuable there, try to do so before you leave home.
Stay visible. Park in well-lit, busy areas of a parking lot whenever possible.
Turn it off! A surprising 1/3 of motorists admit to leaving their vehicle running while unoccupied. Even more break-ins are for vehicles that are not locked. Turn your car off and lock it every single time.

The Nintendo Entertainment system was released on US Shores and Microsoft released the first version of Windows. “We Are the World” was recorded by USA for Africa and Coca-Cola released the New Coke. Rock Me Amadeus and Take On Me were playing on the radio. Moonlighting, The Golden Girls and Growing Pains were on primetime (remember watching commercials?). Back to the Future and The Goonies were playing on the big screen.
Here’s where it gets depressing: Keira Knightley, Kaley Cuoco and Michael Phelps were born in 1985. Ahem, back to happier thoughts: Alarm Engineering installed a burglar alarm for it’s first customer in Salisbury in 1985.
It’s stunning to think about how much has radically changed since 1985. With the advancement of technology and the dramatic ups and downs in the economy, many companies have come and gone. National Night Out now involves over 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, and military bases worldwide. As you can see, It’s stronger than ever in Salisbury.
For this year’s NNO celebration, we gave away an iPad mini, won by Pete and Amanda (pictured below). We had fun with many of our community’s kids with our Cuff the Burglar game (our security take on Pin the Tail on the Donkey), where kids got to be junior crimefighters. Plus, we gave away over 100 McGruff Safe Kids ID Kits, filled with informative and fun safety tips and games for kids and parents and a do-it-yourself fingerprint kit. Local businesses have reported receiving calls from an individual claiming to be a representative of Delmarva Power. The caller reportedly stated that the business’ electric bill was late and that if payment was not received the service would be disconnected. Police say the suspect is male with a Jamaican accent calling from an unknown phone number.
If they contact you, do not provide them any personal information or send money. Do try to get as much information as possible about them including a phone number and contact the police.
If you are a victim of this scam or they have already contacted you, contact the Salisbury Police department.

Lee brings over 25 years of Fire Service with the Salisbury Fire Department. This background and his experience with fire panels and systems offer a unique and valuable foundation to his Systems Specialist role here at Alarm Engineering.
In addition, Lee has 33 years of management and sales experience in the office supply industry, where he served as a Major Account Manager and Sales Manager, with a strong customer service focus.
