3: Specify what your Scene will control.

After creating your button, you’ll see a list of all your system devices below.

For example, you may want this Scene to set the security system to Arm Stay, with the front door locked.

To include a device, check the circle to the left of it, then specify what you want the device to do.

If you like to stay cozy under a blanked, let’s turn the temperature down for this Scene too.

Movies require a blanket, so we're turning the temperature down for this Scene.

Of course the lights have to go off for the movie.

Finally, we're going to have the hallway and living room lights turn off, for perfect movie ambiance.

4: Use your new Scene!

Congratulations, you’ve created your first custom Scene! The next time you log into your security system app, you’ll be able to use it. Swipe left on the Scenes bar to find the new button, and tap once. On the confirmation pop-up, you can see all of the commands you specified. Tap ‘Confirm’ and you’re done!

Summer is here and that means school is out. Differences in routines can mean added concern for parents. Being involved and aware is one of the best ways to make sure your kids stay safe this summer.

Kid Summer Safety & Security

Summer is here and that means school is out. Differences in routines can mean added concern for parents. Being involved and aware is one of the best ways to make sure your kids stay safe this summer. Make it a point to:

  • Know where your children are at all times
  • Participate, whenever possible, in their activities
  • Set boundaries for your children. Make sure they know who/where they are and aren’t allowed to go visit.

Nothing can substitute you being there at all times, but even though children’s schedules change in the summer months, yours likely does not. So when you can’t be there, prepare your children for a safe summer with these best practices:

Stranger/Danger

  1. Reinforce that children trust their gut if they are uncomfortable in any situation. Empower them to say NO!
  2. Create a plan with your children about what to do if they are lost.

Neighborhood

  1. Review with your children which trusted neighbors they can go to if they need help.
  2. Discuss boundaries.
  3. Remind them to always tell you or another trusted adult where they will be and to always take a friend along.

Home Safety

  1. Educate and test your children on how they can reach you. Teach kids how to use 911 when appropriate.
  2. Make sure your children are comfortable locking doors and windows in your home and teach them how to use your security system.
  3. Check in on your children while you’re at work with our Interactive Services on your smartphone and see for yourself that they are safe and sound at home. Get emails and text messages when they go in and out so you know when they left and returned.

First Aid

  1. Make sure you have a well-stocked first aid kit at home and your children know where it is and how to use it.
  2. Be sure to keep a list of emergency numbers where it is easy to find for your children.

Heat Protection

  1. Hydration is so important. Keep drinks well stocked and remind them (and yourself!) to drink often, especially after heavy activity in the hottest parts of the day.
  2. Train your children to be aware of the signs of heat related illnesses, and seek medical attention.

Ticks

Ticks are responsible for a variety of illnesses that can be serious including Lyme Disease. Some suggestions for keeping ticks at bay include:

  1. Wear protective clothing (long sleeves, tucking pants into socks) when in high risk areas.
  2. Stay in the center of walking paths and keep away from overgrown areas.
  3. Perform tick checks on family members every day.

Have you ever left the room, even for a minute, with a candle burning? Have you ever removed a battery in a beeping smoke detector? Ever left the house with your dryer running? Probably, and you might think it’s not a big deal but home safety experts disagree.

Are You Making These 5 Home Safety Mistakes?

Have you ever left the room, even for a minute, with a candle burning? Have you ever removed a battery in a beeping smoke detector? Ever left the house with your dryer running? Probably, and you might think it’s not a big deal but home safety experts disagree.

Here are some of the most important Dos and Don’ts that will help keep you and your family safe.

  • Don’t leave windows wide open.

Burglars are opportunists – don’t make it easy for them. Your window contacts won’t work if the system has already bypassed the window that’s open.

In addition, falls from windows send over 3000 children to the hospital each year according to Safe Kids Worldwide. Children can fall out of a window open just over four inches and a screen doesn’t help.

Do make sure that your windows are protected by your home security system and that if you’re home you’re arming to Stay. Install window guards on all windows and use quick release mechanisms on windows you might use as a fire exit.

  • Never leave candles burning unattended.

On average, 24 home candle fires are reported per day. Fires started by candles cause 100 deaths and 900 injuries per year according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). These fires can start and spread quickly, so don’t ever leave a candle in an empty room.

Do burn candles where you can easily see if fire spreads and keep them at least a foot away from bedding, drapes, furniture or anything else that can burn. Even better, use flameless candles. They are just as pretty and much less dangerous.

  • Don’t ignore low battery warnings from your home security system or smoke detectors.

The beeping that warns you about a low battery in your home security or smoke detectors is annoying, but never remove the battery to try and make it stop. Working smoke detectors cut your risk of dying in a house fire in half says Debra Holtzman, a national child safety and health expert and author of “The Safe Baby: a Do-It-Yourself Guide to Home Safety and Healthy Living.”

Do make sure monitored smoke alarms are installed in every bedroom, outside the sleeping area and on each level of the home. Schedule a system review with our team to make sure you are covered.

Test your smoke alarms frequently. Make sure you call us first to put your system on test. Read troubleshooting details about your home security system here or call us, our team is here to help 24/7.

  • Don’t throw knives in the sink.

Over 1000 people a day get cut badly enough by a knife to go to the Emergency Room, says a study published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine. A frequent mistake is throwing knives into a sink of soapy water.

Do place knives on the counter until they are ready to be washed, far enough away from the edge so that a child cannot reach them.

  • Don’t forget to prepare for emergencies.

Many people don’t have an emergency plan or kit. You never know when an emergency will strike, so preparation is essential. Read what Ready.gov suggests for your family’s emergency kit.

October is Fire Prevention Month. As the weather turns colder we start using heaters, fireplaces and candles more. Here are some quick fire safety tips from the NFPA: Put candles on a sturdy, uncluttered surface and never leave a child alone with a burning candle.

10 Essential Autumn Safety Tips

October is Fire Prevention Month.  As the weather turns colder we start using heaters, fireplaces and candles more. Here are some quick fire safety tips from the U.S. Fire Administration.

  1. Put candles on a sturdy, uncluttered surface and never leave a child alone with a burning candle.
  2. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or space heater.
  3. Only plug one heat-producing appliance (such as coffee makers, toasters or space heaters) into a receptacle outlet at a time.
  4. Never burn candles if oxygen is used in the home.
  5. Test your fire and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure the batteries are fresh and that your equipment isn’t more than 10 years old.

Halloween Safety Tips

Keep the kids safe this Halloween with tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  1. When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
  2. If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child’s costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.
  3. Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
  4. Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers, then the adult can finish the job. If children do the cutting, be sure to use a child safe tool. Check out these pumpkin carving with kids tips.
  5. Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.

Home security is far more than intrusion and smoke alarms, it’s an integrated approach that keeps the bad guys out AND the good guys safe

Keeping the Good Guys Safe

Home security is far more than intrusion and smoke alarms, it’s an integrated approach that keeps the bad guys out AND the good guys safe. You protect your house and valuables; be sure you are protecting what makes your house a home: family.

Video and remote control of your home may sound like too much, but consider these scenarios:

  1. Your children are old enough to come home from school by themselves before you get home. But do you really know when they arrived, who they are bringing home with them or whether homework is getting done? Interactive Services allows you to receive video clips via text or email – so you can have a snapshot video of your children arriving safely home. Or, peek in on them real-time from work and see whether they are doing homework or playing video games.
  2. Monitor doors to the medicine, gun, and liquor cabinet and see valuable video clips triggered by motion. Children are curious and they may not admit that they try to enter adult-only areas of your home when you’re not there. Provide yourself with the peace of mind that comes with knowing.
  3. Need to check in on your elderly parent who is still living independently but recently had a health scare or a fall? Of course we offer personal emergency solutions- but with video clips and real time video, you can do more than alert medical personnel when there is an emergency, you empower yourself to check in on Mom or Dad whenever you want, just to be sure.
  4. Is your pet safe to roam around the house while you’re gone? Just want to check in, or adjust the temperature remotely if there is a severe temperature change to make sure they are comfortable? No problem – smarter home solutions are here.

Getting control of the household budget is something we all attempt to do, but it can be difficult to determine what costs are most expendable. As you weigh the pros and cons of each expense consider that your insurance agent prefers you keep your alarm system monitored.

Smarter Security at your Fingertips

With Alarm Engineering’s integrated services powered by Alarm.com, convenience and control are at your fingertips.  Control your lights, thermostat, appliances, locks and view what’s happening in your home remotely using your smartphone or tablet.

Know when your new dog-sitter came and left. Watch your children get home safely. See whether your pet escaped his cage… again! Set your alarm remotely (or check that it’s on if you don’t remember!) Control the lights on demand or create custom schedules while you’re away on vacation so no one knows you’re gone. Control your thermostat with your smartphone. Receive alerts when your liquor or gun cabinet is opened. Did you leave the garage door open – no worries, check it to be sure and close it remotely if not. Enable aging parents to live independently for years. Talk through your video doorbell camera to the delivery person like you’re home.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. Save time, money, headaches and worry.

According to a new report released by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking remains top cause of home structure fires. "U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 357,000 home structure fires annually between 2009 and 2013. These fires caused an estimated average of 2,470 civilian deaths and $6.9 billion in direct property damage yearly." Follow these important cooking-related safety tips from the NFPA and stay safe:

Cooking Safety Tips

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking remains the top cause of home structure fires.

The Statistics

U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 346,802 home structure fires annually in a recent 4 year span, even though the majority of cooking fires are not reported to fire departments.

These house fires caused an estimated average of 2,620 civilian deaths and $7.3 billion in direct property damage each year. Both of these numbers are an increase from the previous period.

A shocking 75% of (civilian) fire deaths and 72% of injuries come from house fires, according to the NFPA.

Cooking Safety Tips

  1. If you are sleepy, have consumed alcohol or have taken medicine that may make you drowsy, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
  2. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  3. If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer as a reminder that you are cooking.
  4. Keep anything that can catch fire – oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains – away from your stovetop.
  5. When cooking, wear short, close-fitting clothing or tightly rolled sleeves.
  6. If you have a fire in your microwave, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed. Do not open the door until the fire is completely out and have the microwave serviced before using it again.
  7. If a fire starts in your oven, turn off the oven and leave the door closed. The oven should be checked/serviced before used again.
  8. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan. Turn off the burner. do not move the pan. Keep lid on until the pan is completely cool.
  9. Never use a grill on a balcony.
  10. Never add charcoal starter fluid on coals or kindling you’ve already ignited.

Check out the full list of the NFPA’s Cooking Safety best practices.
